Malaysian Bar says MP's proposal is an attempt to rob it of its independence

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar views the proposal to appoint the Attorney-General (AG) as Bar Council president an attempt to rob it of its independence.
Bar Council president Steven Thiru said the Bar rejects the proposal and will do the same for any other attempt to compromise its impartiality.
"The Malaysian Bar will resolutely and vigorously oppose and reject any attempt at interference with its independence, and would be perceived as a desperate measure to silence the Bar," Thiru said in a statement today.
Silam MP Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur had suggested that the AG be automatically appointed as Bar Council president in Parliament on Wednesday.
