Vietjet has Indonesia and the Philippines on its radar, after Malaysia

    KUALA LUMPUR: Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet intends to expand its international route after announcing plans to launch the Kuala Lumpur-Ho Chi Minh City route on June 1, 2016.
    Speaking at a press conference yesterday, its vice-president Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said the launch of the new route is part of its master plan to expand its operating network in Southeast Asia.
    She said Vietjet plans to expand its international network to Japan by the end of this year, and is currently studying the Indonesian and Philippine markets.
    “By the middle of next year, we might have the potential to enter these (Philippine and Indonesian) markets. We will also add five new routes to China this year. Currently we have 15 routes there,” she added.
    At present, the carrier has 47 routes in Vietnam and across the region, including Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Myanmar and Malaysia.
    Meanwhile, its deputy director of commerce Jay L Lingeswara said the group has projected to take in 10 aircraft this year, which will increase its fleet to 45, from 35 currently.
    With the additional aircraft and plans to increase the frequency of its routes in the region, Binh said, the carrier expects to carry 15 million passengers this year.
    In conjunction with the launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Ho Chi Minh City route, Vietjet is giving away 50,000 free tickets.
