LANGKAWI: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission spent over RM100 million over the past year to develop communication infrastructure under the 'Digital Langkawi - Smart Community, Safe Island' initiative.

Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah (pix) said the development had enabled the best telecommunication services to be provided in Langkawi.

"We received feedback that tourists who came here expressed satisfaction with the telecommunications infrastructure which we provided in Langkawi (and even said that) it was on par with other countries," he said after chairing a state government meeting here today.

Among the accomplishments of the initiative include construction of four 1Malaysia internet centres, 260 free Wifi hotspots, internet speeds of up to 100Mbps under the Unifi service, and free Wifi at two mosques.

He also urged hoteliers in Langkawi to help the government's efforts by ensuring good Wifi service at their premises for the convenience of tourists. — Bernama
