PUTRAJAYA: Eleven of the 18 Malaysian students who were affected by the earthquake which struck Kumamoto prefecture in Japan had arrived in Fukuoka.

A statement issued by Wisma Putra said the remaining seven students are still at their respective evacuation centres and awaiting further instruction from the authorities.

"The Foreign Ministry and Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo are monitoring the situation and will inform on the latest development from time to time," it said.

Last Thursday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale rocked south west of Japan at 9.26pm, claiming nine lives, followed by a stronger earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale at about 1.25am local time yesterday, killing 23 people.

About 70,000 people have been evacuated on the orders by the authorities and 200,000 houses are without electricity supply.

The Japanese government announced that it was sending 20,000 personnel, comprising the police, firemen and rescuers to the Kumamoto prefecture today. — Bernama
