New categories for this year's MPI - Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards

KUALA LUMPUR: A new category for "best portal news" has been included in the upcoming Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) – Petronas Malaysian Journalism Award 2015.
The best news portal category is one among five new categories introduced this year. The other four categories are - best front page design layout, best editorial cartoon, best radio report and best info graphic.
With five new categories, MPI's chief executive officer, Datuk Dr. Chamil Warya said, they will now have 18 categories for the awards this year.
"A total of 438 participation were submitted, including 75 participation for "news portal" category," he said after a cheque presentation ceremony by the sponsors at Hotel Pacific here today.
theSun newspaper had submitted 16 articles in the "newspaper" category.
This year, award winners will stand to get a 10 inch tall trophy made of metal with gold plated base costing RM1,000 each with certificates.
The Kajai Award winner will receive RM30,000 while winners from other categories will receive RM10,000, a reduction from RM15,000 last year.
Except for the Kajai Award, there will be two consolation prize winners for all other categories. Consolation prize winners will receive RM1,000 each.
"The intention is to recognise as many journalists as possible," said Chamil.
A sum of RM657,500 was raised for the award ceremony which will be held at Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur on May 20, 2016.
Petronas contributed RM300,000 while the balance was raised through other sponsors and through the sale of sponsored tables.
Berjaya Corporation Berhad, who was represented by senior executive - corporate communications and investor relations division, Melissa Wong handed a mock cheque for RM7,500.
