Phone trader charged with taking World Cup football bets

    KUALA LUMPUR: A phone trader pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of acting as a bookie and taking bets for the 2014 World Cup football matches.
    Chen Chee Keong, 43, was alleged to have committed the offence at WCS Telecommunications, No 23, ground floor, Lorong Haji Taib 1 here at 11 pm on June 28, 2014.
    He was charged under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953 which provides for a maximum fine of RM200,000 and jail not more than five years.
    Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin proposed bail at RM50,000 in one surety, but counsel S.N Nair requested the bail be reduced as the accused had to support his wife, children and ailing mother.
    Magistrate Mahyudin Mohmad Som allowed the accused bail of RM20,000 in one surety and set May 10 for remention. — Bernama
