KUALA LUMPUR: The Automated Enforcement System (AES) has proven effective in reducing fatal road accidents since its implementation in 2012.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said fatal accidents were reduced substantially in 14 locations where AES was installed.
"In 14 locations where the AES was installed, the number of fatal road accidents were reduced from 19 cases to 12 cases within eight months. A reduction of seven cases or 36.84%.
"Road Safety Research (Miros) also showed that the rate of drivers following the speed limit improved from 63% to 91% after AES was implemented," Ab Aziz told the Dewan Negara today.
He said the government will continue to expand the AES, which will be rebranded into the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas), and merge it with the Kejara demerit system.
Ab Aziz said the implementation cost will be borne by service providers ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd, which are currently in takeover negotiations with the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT).
He was answering an oral question from Senator Datuk Ng Chiang Chin, who asked for Awas's implementation details and its costs.
When met at the Parliament lobby later, he said the government is confident that Awas will improve road safety due to its nature of 24 hours enforcement.
He also explained that road users including motorcyclists will be given demerit points based on the severity of their offences.
Ab Aziz explained that once a user has over 20 points, his or her license will be suspended and it will be cancelled entirely if the user accumulates over 40 points.
