Serdang IPD begins using cavalry unit to help reduce crime rate

KUALA LUMPUR: The Serdang District Police headquarters (IPD) is now using the services of the Federal Reserve Unit's (FRU) cavalry team in its patrol activities to help reduce the crime rate in the area.

Serdang police chief ACP Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias said patrol activities would now involve six members of the cavalry unit, who would be stationed in hotspots such as Puchong and other areas around the district.

"The cavalry unit, together with our motorcycle patrol unit and the mobile patrol vehicle unit will be patrolling in two shifts - morning and afternoon.

"The reason we are using horses is because they have high visibility, that is they can spot something as far as 100m.

"If members of the cavalry unit see anything suspicious, such as an attempt to break into a vehicle, they will immediately inform members on duty and the operations room," he told a press conference after the launch of the 'Cavalry Patrol With Bukit Aman's FRU Commander' programme at Bandar Puteri Puchong near here yesterday.

Crime prevention patrols by FRU's cavalry unit have also been implemented in several other areas including Wangsa Maju and Kajang.
The unit was established on August 22, 1984, and was one of the initiatives by the police to assist communities and fight crime. — Bernama
