KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit retreated from earlier gains to close slightly lower against the US dollar today, as some investors booked profit ahead of the long weekend, dealers said.
At 5pm, the local note stood at 3.9000/9070 against the US dollar from 3.8940/9000 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) maintaining interest rate levels, the greenback continued to struggle to make significant headway against major currencies.
With the Bank of Japan having refrained from further stimulus measures at its recent meeting, the yen is set to record its biggest weekly gain since the 2008 financial crisis.
The ringgit traded mostly lower against other major currencies.
It weakened against the Singapore dollar to 2.9024/9083 from Thursday's 2.8986/9039 and depreciated against the yen to 3.6411/6487 from 3.6012/6078.
It slid against the euro to 4.4370/4462 from 4.4220/4304, but advanced against the British pound to 5.6862/6984 from 5.6868/6975 on Wednesday.
The market will be closed on Monday for the Labour Holiday. — Bernama
