BESUT: A man is being remanded for four days to assist police investigations into the alleged abuse of his disabled nine-year-old daughter.
Besut district police chief, Supt Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said following a public complaint on Thursday, the man was arrested at his house in Jerteh, here, at 3.20am yesterday.
He said the girl was reportedly often beaten up by her stepfather, leaving bruises on her face and body.
However, he said, the mother, originally from Raub, Pahang, was too scared of her husband to do anything each time, except to apply medication to her injuries after he left for work.
Following the public complaint, the girl who attends a special class at a school in Jerteh, was taken by staff of the Social Welfare Department for medical examination and treatment at the Besut District Hospital.
Mohd Zamri said the case was being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM20,000 or a jail term of up to 10 years, or both. — Bernama
