MICHELIN-starred chef Hélène Darroze from The Connaught in London is set to return to her Basque roots by taking on a pop-up restaurant in the Hotel Maria Cristina in the Spanish city of San Sebastian. The five-star hotel has already gained popularity in the fine dining capital of the Basque country.
Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian has been a haven of luxury on Spain's Basque coast since 1912, with many famous guests having passed through its doors including Alfred Hitchcock and Mata Hari. Now it's planning to try its luck with a new initiative in a city famous for its local cuisine.
The city of San Sebastian is home to the Arzak family, where Elena – who cooks with her father Juan Mari – was named the best female chef in the world by the World's 50 Best Awards. The Arzak family restaurant has earned three Michelin stars.
The "Hélène Darroze at Hotel Maria Cristina" pop-up restaurant, which opens from June 8 to October 30, will serve pintxos – tapas-style small dishes common in the Basque country.
Fans of fine dining will be interested in one of the chef's signature dishes: oyster "tartare" and caviar gelatin accompanied by a chilled white bean soup. A reinterpreted version of gazpacho will also be on the menu. A choice of three menus will be available, at €98 (RM440), €125 and €175, with the restaurant open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. — AFP Relaxnews
