PETALING JAYA: On World Press Freedom Day today, media groups in Malaysia renewed their call for freedom of information and expression.
The Institute of Journalists Malaysia (IoJ) said freedom of information must be protected in a mature democracy so that citizens are aware of matters affecting them.
"As Malaysia moves towards developed nation status by 2020, fundamental freedom like freedom of information must similarly be increased to promote a marketplace of ideas and to allow society to flourish," it said in a statement.
The group also called for the repeal of oppressive laws such as the Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA), the Sedition Act 1948 and the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (PPPA).
"These laws, many of which date back to the era of colonial rule, give the authorities the power to decide broadly what can and cannot be discussed in public. Such legislation should not have any place in a modern democracy," IoJ added.
Meanwhile, Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm), called on all parties to respect the people's rights to freedom of thought and expression, and for all media practitioners to be mindful of their rights in carrying out their duties.
"We believe that the time has come for all media practitioners to unite under the same goal - defending our rights to carry out the duties which has been entrusted upon us.
"All manners of pressure and harassment being inflicted on any media practitioner should be felt by all of us," it said in a statement.
