KUCHING: Peace and political stability are like "Siamese twins" in that they are inseparable and a prerequisite for continued progress of a country, said Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
The prime minister said without political stability, it would be difficult to bring development and the economy would not grow.
"Without political stability, people will not have confidence in the country, investors won't come," he said at the "Leaders with Rela" event at the Borneo Convention Centre here today.
As such, Najib said the people must understand this concept of "Siamese twins" and retain the existing government to defend the peace and prosperity enjoyed all this while.
Najib who is also BN chairman said it was typical of the opposition to resort to psychological warfare to confuse the people during elections.
He said voters should know how to distinguish between what is acceptable and what is merely propaganda to ignite the sentiments of the people and arouse anger against the government.
"They (opposition) realise if they cannot convince the voters, they can at least confuse them. This is the psychological warfare tactic of the opposition. It has already been proven in several previous elections," he said.
On the claim by Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen that the Goods and Services (GST) would be increased if BN is given a strong mandate, Najib said this was a deception.
Najib who is also Finance Minister said there had not been any discussion by the Finance Ministry or Cabinet to increase it.
Meanwhile, Najib said he is always by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem's side to ensure victory for all the BN components in the state election.
Earlier, after chairing the Federal Cabinet meeting in Petrajaya, Najib said there is nothing extraordinary about holding the meeting in Sarawak because each minister has responsibilities at the state level.
He said this was different from the presence of state leaders like Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who is in Sarawak for the sole purpose of campaigning.
"If the opposition wants to make this an issue, I wish to remind their leaders like Guan Eng, that he has no powers outside Penang but is here only for campaigning purposes.
"Each minister has ministerial responsibilities in each state. Ministers will look into work done by their respective ministries, problems of the people, do monitoring, effectiveness of policies, and projects approved by the government," he told a press conference after chairing the weekly Federal Cabinet meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia (the Sarawak state secretariat building).
He added that having Federal Cabinet meetings outside Putrajaya was done from time to time. — Bernama
