PUTRAJAYA: Communication is one of the biggest challenges the government is facing in its efforts to connect with the public.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh (pix) said the government, including his Ministry, has been delivering on its goals and promises but it is difficult to get the word out.
The goals include an average 5.6% economic growth since 2010, the highest in South East Asia, consistently reducing fiscal deficit until an estimated 3.2% for Budget 2016 among others.
"Our top most challenge in explaining to the people is communication. Our second most? Communication. Our third? Communication.
"US president Barack Obama had implemented many policies throughout his years as president, but even he had problems explaining it to his people," Idris said during a speech at his Ministry.
He said this can be improved by having government staffers actively engage with the public on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
Idris said if every staffer starts posting their work and achievements in the government, this will snowball into a large social media presence that will raise public awareness.
He said the Higher Education Ministry on its part will also release public bulletins and continue physical engagements with the people.
Idris was launching the 9th World University Squash Championship 2016, which will be held from Sept 5 to Sept 11 at the Nicol David Arena in Bukit Jalil.
Chairman of Malaysia University Sports Council (Masum) Professor Dato' Dr. Abdullah Mohamad Said said that 17 countries have confirmed their participation in the tournament so far and other interested nations have until June 30 to register.
