16 illegal immigrants detained during 'Op Rantau'

    GEORGE TOWN: A total of 16 illegal immigrants including three women were rounded up in an operation code-named 'Op Rantau' in four separate locations in North-East district here yesterday.
    North-East district police chief Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the operation which began at 9pm was conducted at Solok Merican, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Lebuh Victoria, and Lebuh Katz.
    "In the operation, a total of 178 foreigners of various nationalities were screened and 16 of them including three women failed to produced valid travel documents. They were found to have overstayed in the country without permission," he said in statement released to media today.
    He said those arrested comprised of five Indonesians, six Bangladeshis, four from Myanmar and one Nepalese.
    The operation involved 10 police personnel who were assisted by the police reserve unit and the Penang Immigration Department.
    The case is being investigated under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Section 15(4) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
