Compel SPM holders who do not perform academically to pursue TVET: Sahol Hamid

KUALA LUMPUR: Bumiputra Education Tour 2016 Main Committee chairman Tan Sri Prof Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar today proposed to the government to compel Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders who failed to perform academically to pursue technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
He said this was because the current industry market trends were focusing more on graduates with skills and technical qualifications.
"In other countries, like Korea, TVET is categorised as high class education, and students who did not enter university will be compelled to pursue skill-based education.
"If this proposal can be materialised, the country's dependency on foreign skilled workers can be reduced," he told reporters at the Bumiputra Education Tour 2016 here today.
At the same time, Sahol Hamid said there was a wrong perception among parents about technical and vocational graduates being less successful compared to graduates in other fields, and such a perception must be corrected.
He said it was no joke that a vocational and technical graduate could earn a handsome salary of up to RM15,000 based on their qualification and experience. — Bernama
