PUTRAJAYA: The outcome of the just-concluded Sarawak state election reflects increasing support of the people in Sarawak for the Barisan Nasional and the BN-led government, Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said today.

The Prime Minister said that with such a mandate from the people, it was all the more necessary for the civil service and its officers to always keep in touch with the pulse of the people.

The agenda of the government is to fulfil the needs of the people, including in Sarawak and Sabah which are extensive states that demand much time and high costs, he said.

"We can consider solutions such as the provision of roads that meet the standards of the Public Works Department and all longhouses being equipped with a network of pipelines and micro hydro systems.

"These are examples that we can think of. Depriving the people these facilities and services is not an alternative and we cannot deny them the basic amenities. This is morally wrong," he said at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department.
Najib said the commitment of the federal and state governments was the basis of success that should continue.

He said the victory in Sarawak also showed the expectations of the people for the government to carry out development, which was an important agenda that had to be implemented in a certain period of time.

The government had well-planned development programmes for implementation, right down to the grassroots, he said.

"We have a plan and we are executing and delivering it. As such, the people will have more confidence in the pledges that we make and implement. We must not forget that this is our responsibility," he said.

Najib said the government had implemented various programmes requested by the people in Sarawak and elsewhere in the country, and cited the Pan Borneo Highway as an example.
"We are still able to take care of the welfare of civil service employees. We will go ahead and implement the special annual increment on July 1. We are also implementing the higher minimum salary," he said.

In the Sarawak state election on Saturday, the BN won 72 of the 82 seats at stake to achieve a super majority and retain the state government. In the 2011 state election, the BN had won 55 of the 71 seats at stake. — Bernama
