PETALING JAYA:Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is also Umno president, said the party had rescued the Malays and bumiputra from the clutches of abject poverty.
In a tweet yesterday, Najib also provided a graph which stated that poverty among the bumiputra was at 64.8% in 1970, but dropped to 0.8% in 2014.
"Umno has implemented numerous initiatives since 1970 to bring Malays and bumiputra out of abject poverty," Najib said via his tweethandle @NajibRazak.
Among the initiatives made by the government then was the New Economic Policy (NEP), which was launched by the second prime minister, who is also Najib's father, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
The New Economic Policy (NEP) was a social re-engineering and affirmative action program formulated by the National Operations Council (NOC) in the aftermath of the May 13 racial riots.
This policy was adopted in 1971 for a period of 20 years and it was succeeded by the National Development Policy (NDP).
Najib tweeted this as a run-up to the Umno 70th anniversary this Saturday.
