Kuala Kangsar voters want candidate who fulfils promises

KUALA KANGSAR: "We want leaders who can fulfil their promises instead of merely making pledges," said a young voter in the run-up to the by-election for the Kuala Kangsar Parliamentary constituency.
Mohd Zuhair Zaini, 25, said the young voters in the constituency certainly aspired for changes and development but what was more important was for the leaders to fulfil their promises.
"We do not want candidates who merely come to give money or 'goodies' during the campaign but forget their promises. We are not like the previous generation who were easily duped in that way," he told Bernama, here today.
Nurul Amira Rojili, 26, shared Mohd Zuhair's view, adding that she wanted responsible leaders, especially this would be the first time she was eligible to vote.
"This is the first time I will be voting here, so I don't care who are contesting, but I want a candidate who is responsible and fulfils his or her promises," she said.
Meanwhile, Jefri Din, 46, said he wanted a leader who could continue the legacy left by the former Member of Parliament, the late Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad.
"For me, I prefer a new face so that he would not be involved in past problems," he said.
Asked for his opinion on the view that the late Wan Mohammad's wife might be fielded as a candidate, he said this could be a positive suggestion.
"Nothing wrong, although Datin Mastura is not a politician, she is already known among the electorate here and she is close to the people. Furthermore, she knows better the aspiration of her late husband," he said.
Meanwhile, the State Assemblyman for Chandan, Maslin Sham Razman felt that the candidate fielded must have an approach that was almost similar to that of the late Wan Mohammad.
"The late Datuk Wan was simple, friendly, dynamic and did not place much importance on protocol. Most of all, he loved the people of Kuala Kangsar. If possible, let the candidate be a local," he said.
For Manong Assemblyman Mohd Kamil Shafie, he believed the top leadership had better knowledge as to which candidate was more suitable to ensure that the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat remained with the Barisan Nasional.
"The sadness on the passing of the Member of Parliament was still felt by the constituents, so whoever is the candidate is not a major issue because he or she would only complete the term, the real target is the next General Election," he said.
The Election Commission yesterday fixed the by-election for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat simultaneously with the by-election for the Sungai Besar seat in Selangor on June 14, while nomination day was set for June 5.
Both the by-elections were being held following the death of the incumbents Datuk Noriah Kasnon, who was also the Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, and Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad who were killed in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5. — Bernama
