GEORGE TOWN: Magnificient Emblem Sdn Bhd, the company linked to businesswoman Phang Li Koon who sold a house to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pix), did not get a project for workers' villages.
Lim said the company was not successful in the open tender exercise to buy the land from the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) as it did not adhere to the Request For Proposal (RFP) conditions.
He said the tender was awarded to Westlite Dormitory (Penang – Juru) Sdn Bhd for offering the highest bid.
"Only a plot of land in Juru was tendered while the one in Batu Kawan was discontinued," he said in a written reply to a question by Cheah Kah Peng (PKR–Kebun Bunga).
Lim said the workers' villages are to house foreign workers so as to address the complaints by local residents who were staying in areas with large foreign worker populations.
He said such villages will also address the issue of low-cost and low-medium-cost (LMC) units being rented to foreign workers.
"Such units should be owner occupied and not rented out," he added.
