KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) nabbed two Pakistani nationals for driving taxis without licences in Bukit Bintang here on Saturday.
RTD Deputy Director of Enforcement Muhammad Kifli Mahassan said the duo were picked up during a special operation by the department in the city beginning at 8pm on Saturday night.
"The two man aged 39 and 40 could not produce valid driving licences nor the public service vehicle licence but dared to carry passengers in their taxis.
"They will be handed over to the Immigration Department for further action while the taxis they were driving have been impounded to facilitate the investigation," he said.
Muhammad Kifli said the RTD would submit a report to the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and urge them to take appropriate action against companies that break the law and taxi owners who allow foreigners to drive taxies illegally.
Meanwhile, RTD enforcement team also nabbed two more foreigners — an Indonesian and Indian national - for driving a lorry without a licence.
The duo, both in their 40s, were picked up along Jalan Genting Sempah.
Muhammad Kifli added that the operation was carried out by 24 RTD enforcement officers and about 170 summonses for various road offences throughout the city had also been issued.
RTD enforcement director Datuk Valluvan Veloo issued a stern warning that action will be taken in accordance with the law if taxi owners and operators fail to comply with the existing regulations.
"The enforcement teams are doing their best in assisting taxi operators and drivers but we are disappointed that some of them (taxi operators) choose to let unlicensed foreigners to drive their vehicles.
"Passengers must feel safe and I hope taxi operators will stop doing this," he told theSun.
