Authorities looking into problems in Malaysia's immigration screening system

IPOH: The Home Ministry is cooperating with the National Audit Department to look into the frequent problems encountered in the Immigration screening system in the country.
"We want to know and pinpoint whether the system itself is failing so action can be taken against the supplier. If the problem is due to human error then the operational approach by those in charge has to be revisited," Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pix) told reporters after chairing the Kuala Kangsar parliament coordination development committee meeting here today.
"If we find any element of sabotage of breach of trust then those involved have to face the consequences," he added.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said investigations are ongoing and the outcome will be announced by the Immigration Department and police.
"We will still monitor and those in high positions or lower categories will not escape legal action."
A local daily reported that the Home Ministry will set up a task force to upgrade the existing immigration screening system.
Glaring flaws such as frequent breakdowns were detected and authorities were investigating the possibility of compromise so that individuals enter and exit the country at ease.
When asked why the shortcomings were not found in the earlier audits, Ahmad Zahid said: "Updating is an ongoing process but this time around there is an element of sabotage." he added.
