KUCHING: The Sarawak Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested 54 individuals for involvement in various bribery cases from January until May this year.
Its director Datuk Badrul Shah Norman said 20 of those arrested had been charged in court.
"These individuals, including civil servants, were detained for various offences such as giving bribes and others.
"Out of the 54 individuals arrested, 30 are aged 40 years and below," he told reporters after the 'MACC meets non governmental organisations (NGOs)' programme at the Islamic Information Centre here today.
The programme, jointly organised by MACC and Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) Sarawak, aimed to bring MACC closer to NGOs and the community to gain public support in the fight against corruption.
Commenting on the programme, Badrul Shah said cooperation with the NGOs was needed to disseminate information and, most importantly, they did not have to worry because there were laws to protect them.
"Those disseminating information are protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711) and Witness Protection Act 2009 (Act 696).
Everything that you channel to SPRM, the identity of that informer is strictly confidential," he added. — Bernama
