KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to implement the rainwater harvesting system to overcome the water supply shortage problem, especially during droughts.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the framework on the system was being prepared by the ministry before being tabled to the relevant parties including the state governments, National Physical Development Council and National Water Resources Council.
"If all the parties agree with the plan, the ministry will table it before the Cabinet so that it can be implemented," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here.
Junaidi said currently, only 15% to 18% of rainwater were being harvested.
"Most of the rainwater flow to the sea. Some are absorbed by the soil and some go into the rivers which flow to the sea."
He said the rainwater harvesting method had been used by several countries including Poland. — Bernama
