Tourism Ministry orders probe between its chairman and AirAsia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism Ministry has ordered a probe into the feud between Tourism Malaysia chairman Wee Choo Keong and low cost carrier AirAsia Bhd.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said the probe would be undertaken internally by Tourism Malaysia on the alleged unruly behaviour against AirAsia before proceeding for further action.
It was reported that Wee had allegedly lost his cool and reprimanded his staff during the 4th China (Beijing) International Tourism Expo 2016 after seeing an AirAsia bunting put up alongside other promotional material at the Tourism Malaysia booth.
"I have asked Tourism Malaysia to call a meeting as soon as possible. I was made to understand the meeting will happen at 3pm on May 30.
"The meeting will not only discuss actions but also create a investigation committee to conduct a detailed probe on the matter," Nazri told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday.
He said he will meet Wee after getting the results of the probe.
Nazri said the outcome and recommendation of the probe will be forwarded to Wee for further action.
He said so far AirAsia has been a strategic partner and has tendered good cooperation with Tourism Malaysia to-date.
"(AirAsia) has also agreed on our request to open more routes which would bring more tourists from China to Malaysia," he said.
On Sunday, AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes reportedly alleged that Wee has been "tormenting" the budget airline, following the incident where Wee lost his cool at the Beijing International Tourism Expo.
It was reported that the long-standing feud between the duo has reached a new height, taking into account AirAsia's law suit against Wee last year, alleging the latter of frequently making defamatory claims against the low-cost carrier.
