South African sentenced to death for trafficking nearly 1.6kg of meth

PETALING JAYA: A South African was yesterday sentenced to death by the High Court in Alor Star for trafficking nearly 1.6kg of methamphetamine three years ago.
Benjamin William Hawkes, 46, nodded when Judicial Commissioner Choo Kah Sing passed his judgment.
Hawkes, who is from Durban, had been found guilty for committing the offence at the Langkawi's International Airport arrival hall at 9pm on July 21, 2013.
When the judgment was made, Choo, said the court had found the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
"I hereby sentence you, Benjamin William Hawkes, to be hanged by the neck, to death," he said.
Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid represented Hawkes while Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Izhanudin Alias prosecuted.
