KAJANG: Police shot dead four armed house break-in suspects along the Kajang Silk Highway at 6.15am today.
The drama unfolded when the suspects broke into a house in Taman Saujana Impian here at about 3.15am.
Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said police were alerted to the attempted robbery when the victim's house alarm was triggered.
"Initial investigations revealed that the five suspects fled the house when its security alarm was triggered.
"Following the incident, a team from the Selangor police Criminal Investigations Department's Serious Crime Division (D9) was deployed to hunt for the suspects.
"The team tracked the suspects to a forest area near the housing area and followed their trail along Sungai Sekamat," he told reporters when met at the scene today.
Abdul Samah said when policemen spotted the suspects at the river near the Sungai Long Toll Plaza at the Kajang Silk Highway at about 6.15am, the suspects attacked the policemen with parang.
"Police had no choice but had to fire at them as they did not heed the warnings," he said.
The suspects were in their 20's to 30's and one of them managed to escape.
Abdul Samah added that investigators learnt that the suspect who escaped had sustained gunshot injuries as he left a trail of blood at the scene.
A manhunt has been initiated to track down the fifth suspect.
Kajang district police chief ACP Othman Nayan when met at the Kajang districts police headquarters said a team from the General Operations Force have also been deployed to hunt down the remaining suspect.
Othman said police seized several parang, ski masks and a document believed to belong to a foreigner at the scene.
Police believe the suspects are members of the "Rantau Gang" which was notorious for house break-in activities in the Kajang area, and that the jungle area was their frequent escape route.
"The gang's modus operandi was to break into a house during the wee hours before tying up their victims and robbing them of their valuables," Othman said, adding police have yet to ascertain the identity of the suspects.
Between Jan 1 and May 26, there were 19 robbery cases and five attempted robberies using the same modus operandi reported in Kajang alone.
