KL mayor decides against more cameras

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will not increase the numbers of closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) cameras in the city despite the high number of snatch theft cases.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Amin Nordin Abd Aziz explained that the current number of CCTV cameras installed in various locations in the city is sufficient.
"There is no need for that because there are already 1,000 CCTV cameras installed, even exceeding those available in Australia.
"What is needed is to improve the existing infrastructure around the city centre to tackle this crime," he told reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad today.
Towards this end, DBKL is already putting up more street lights, lighting up dark places as well as putting more anti-climb barriers on walkways.
"For this, we are working closely with the police and the urban planning department," he said.
It was reported that during the first two months of this year, a total of 194 cases of thefts occurred in Kuala Lumpur and the number is more than three times for the same period last year where only 63 cases occurred.
