KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak (pix) launched here today a people's aid tour programme organised by the party's Welfare Bureau.
In a symbolic gesture of launching the 'Program Jelajah Turun Padang Bantu Rakyat', the Prime Minister handed over aid to 50 orphans from the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.
He also flagged off 35 four-wheel-drive vehicles carrying 150 people drawn from, among others, the Wanita Umno 'Skuad Sayang' (Love Squad), Umno Youth, Puteri Umno, Umno Welfare Bureau Disaster Aid Volunteer Brigade and several reporters.
The five-day programme, covering 22 locations including in Sabah during the upcoming Ramadan fasting month, seeks to foster closer rapport with the people through donation of aid to the 191 Umno divisions for people from all walks of life such as single mothers, orphans and people with chronic ailments.
Umno Welfare Bureau chairman Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said it was hoped that the programme would help boost the image of Umno as a party that helps the people.
"It is our hope that the people realise that the party has done a lot, directly through the party and indirectly through the government administration helmed by the party and its colleagues," he said.
He said UMNO did not provide aid to the people seasonally but consistently to realise the party agenda of taking care of the people's welfare.
Also present at the event were UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and UMNO Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa. — Bernama
