Ikatan suggests BN leaders stop competitive politics with DAP

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia feels that Barisan Nasional leaders should cease engaging in competitive politics with DAP just to prove to the people who is better.
Ikatan president Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir said carrying on with this game would only jeopardise the nation, people and the political parties, especially in view of the recent tabling of the Private Member's Bill on Syariah law by PAS in the Dewan Rakyat.
"I do not understand why MCA, MIC and Gerakan made strong protests against the Bill. It is very clear that the (PAS) proposal was to enhance the Syariah Courts and does not have anything to do with hudud.
"It is also not contrary to the Federal Constitution," he said in a statement today.
Abdul Kadir said MCA, MIC and Gerakan should revive their formula for success of yesteryear and not resort to competitive politics.
He said it was hoped that this game would be terminated and not popularised so that it did not undermine relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.
On May 26, PAS president and Marang MP Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang tabled a Private Member's Bill which sought to amend Section 2 of the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 which states that the Syariah Courts will have jurisdiction over Muslims, and in the case of offences on matters listed in Item 1 of the State List under the Ninth Schedule of Federal Laws.
It was also to include Section 2A, which states that in the conduct of criminal law under Section 2, the Syariah Courts have the right to impose penalties allowed by Syariah laws related to offences listed in the said section, besides the death penalty. — Bernama
