Movie Review - Me Before You

BASED on a novel by Jojo Moyes, this movie seems like one of those sappy romances but ends up being much more.
It’s about two very different people from different worlds who come together to share a brief but meaningful relationship.

Louisa Clark or Lou (Emilia Clarke) is a sweet young woman who loses her job as a waitress.
Desperate to help her family, she takes on the post of caregiver to Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), who is paralysed due to a spinal cord injury he sustained in an accident.
While nurse/occupational therapist Nathan (Stephen Peacocke) does most of the heavy lifting, it is Lou’s job to be Will’s companion and carry out simple tasks for him.
Will initially resents her presence but eventually finds Lou’s earnestness charming.
Having lived an adventurous life before the accident, he finds it hard to accept that Lou has settled into a boring life in their small town even though she seems to have “potential”.
“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible,” he tells Lou in one scene.
So when she overhears his parents (played by Janet McTeer and Charles Dance) talk about how Will intends to end his life in a Swiss clinic soon, she takes it upon herself to help him fulfil whatever he wants to do in the hope that he will change his mind.
It soon becomes a special journey for both (with Nathan in tow) as they learn to embrace life and all that it means to them.
The movie works because of the chemistry between the leads and also the excellent direction by Sharrock who delivers a hopeful story. Highly recommended.
