JOHOR BARU: Businessman Nadzeri Mustaffa, 52, began his 1,000km solo kayak journey from Tampoi here today to help promote Visit Kedah Year 2016.
Region Two marine police commander Assistant Commissioner Paul Khiu Khon Chiang flagged off his solo journey from the Johor fishing department jetty in Tampoi near here.
The trip is expected to take about a month with Nadzeri, an experienced kayak instructor and diver, planning to arrive at his hometown of Kodiang, Kedah, on July 3.
"I hope more people will visit Kedah," he said at the ceremony.
Nadzeri, who will be ending his journey in Tanjung Charli, said kayaking during Ramadan is a challenge for him and he plans do so from about 3am to around 11am daily, and the rest of the time he will be on land.
He hopes this strategy will give him more energy to cope with the challenges at sea.
Nadzeri has done several long distance solo kayaking in the past, like from Pengkalan Kubor, Kelantan, to Langkawi, a distance of 2,000km, in 2014.
He sees this journey as a training on whether he is strong enough to do a grand solo kayak journey from Langkawi to Gaza, some 17,000km, in 2018 to raise awareness on the situation faced by the people there.
