Father seeks assistance to help three-year-old son obtain a birth certificate

GEORGE TOWN: A father of three is at his wits end as his youngest son is stateless without a birth certificate three years after his birth.
K. Kalyana, 48, said he encountered problems with registering his son as a Hindu as he married a Muslim woman in 1995 but claimed she converted out of Islam after they were married.
He said the National Registration Department (NRD) had offered to register his son as a Muslim but he refused.
Kalyana questioned why his third son was facing such obstacles and pointed out that his two other children did not face such problems when registering their birth and religion as Hindus.
He said he was in a bind now as no kindergarten will accept his youngest son and expressed worry about the child's future.
"I hope this can be settled quickly for the sake of my son," he said in a press conference today with Paya Terubong assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin.
Yeoh said he will be raising the matter with Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim soon.
"It is strange that the NRD is doing this, I will bring the case to the attention of the Exco concerned," he said, adding that he did not rule out legal action in the matter.
