KUALA LUMPUR: The media plays an integral role in bringing the nation forward.
In this respect, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak reminded media practitioners not to be a burden to the nation by reporting "half truth" news.
"The government wants nothing but to bring the nation forward and prosperity to the people and to achieve this objective, the media is the government's strategic partner," Najib said during his speech at a buka puasa event with media members and bloggers at
Utusan Malaysia headquarters here today.
"And if the media plays their role right, the task would be easy for us," he added.
Najib said there's no such thing as "total freedom" and urged all media practitioners to report responsibly, truthfully and fast.
"The government can use Multimedia Act to take action against those practitioners that are irresponsible. But when we punish them, we are accused of being autocratic and dictatorial," Najib said.
Also present at the event was Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh
Said Keruak, and Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
