Movie Review - The Conjuring 2

ONE of the reasons why I stopped watching horror movies was because I was tired of their horribly ill-conceived plots with excessive dependence on cheap jump scares.
But instead of shaking with anger (I get angry from jump scares), this one grips me like a vice.
Following the success of The Conjuring, Malaysian-born director James Wan returns with a sequel based on the real-life haunting of the Enfield Poltergeist in the late 70s from the files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as the Warrens.
The Warrens head to a small council house in North London where the Hodgsons, a single mother and her four children, are terrorised by an entity.
Lorraine has also been experiencing visions of a demonic-looking nun ever since the couple investigated the Amityville murders.
The storyline is as such that it is pretty much a textbook haunted house tale complete with inexplicable movements of furniture, levitations, ghostly apparitions ... you name it, it’s there.
What essentially makes it creepy are the director’s creations of these apparitions and how he presents the scares with such superb timing and flair.
The pauses are acute and last long enough for your own paranoia to rise and peak, before Wan jumps in and seals the deal with a bang.
For example, Wan effectively establishes a frightful, ghastly face (that of the demonic nun) right at the beginning of the movie through Lorraine, and then uses it brilliantly later for a few truly frightening jump scares.
By then, that doesn’t make me angry, I am literally spooked out of my seat.
The acting, especially from Farmiga and Wilson, is one of the best parts of the film.
Their onscreen chemistry is indisputable as they again portray characters that the audience can approve and empathise with.
The film is based on a true story about real people, but Wan and his actors are able to craft a compelling, and entertaining, version of events, making this horror movie a good one.
