PUTRAJAYA: The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) is calling on those with information on enforcement officers involved in fraudulent activities related to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to come forward.
EAIC chairman Datuk Yaacob Md Sam said provisions of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009 [Act 700] gave statutory powers to investigate the misconduct of enforcement officers and enforcement agencies under EAIC.
In a statement today, he said the commission was concerned with the issue of LPG irregularities reported (in Utusan Malaysia) on the involvement of domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism ministry enforcement officers and security personnel.
According to the report, corrupt practices including leaking operational information and the monthly collections by some members of enforcement agencies were the cause of LPG fraud being still rampant, besides allowing syndicates to continue their illegal activities without fear.
The ministry is one of the agencies under the EAIC supervision.
Yaacob said the EAIC was also in the process of obtaining evidence from the Consumer Protection Association of Malaysia, in relation to these activities.
In another development, he fully supported the decision of the National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada) to gazette an authorised place of detention for drug offenders under the National Anti-Drugs Agency (amendment) Bill 2016.
With the gazetting of the special lock-up, chronic or hardcore drug addicts who are usually placed in police custody in remand or waiting for results of a urine test or a court hearing, can be better managed and given proper treatment by Nada.
Yaacob said efforts to detain drug offenders separately from other criminal offenders would reduce or prevent deaths of prisoners in police custody.
"EAIC expects Nada to formulate a comprehensive standard operating procedure in the administration and management of the lock-up, with regard to all regulations and laws related to it," he added. — Bernama
