Book Review - Twenty-Two New Asian Short Stories

15 Jun 2016 / 18:17 H.

THIS is one of the best collection of short stories that I have read in a long time. So hats off to the editor who put this together after calling for entries for short stories in English from all over Asia.
Majority of the entries are from India (eight), Singapore (five) and The Philippines (four).
Malaysia’s sole entry is Angela Jessie Michael’s The Walking Women that tells the story of two old ladies from impoverished households who would every once in a while go for long walks in the neighbourhood and stop by at a wealthier acquaintance’s house for a free meal.
But one fateful day, they were stopped short by reality which hit them smack on their faces.
Each story has a different style and topic whether it is a woman facing severe punishment from a village leader for spurning his advances in The Mollah’s Revenge; a woman betrayed by her late husband in The Girl and the Snake; the only witness to a celebrity’s suicide in The Makeup Man; a sister trying to fulfil her dead brother’s dying wish in Ghost Dreams; or a woman who clings to the past in Unnecessary Fictions.
As the stories here are all short, you won’t find yourself getting bored.
But the editor’s intro (which is longer than any of the stories) gives away quite a few spoilers. So beware.
