Voters in Kuala Kangsar, Sungai besar go to polls in two by-elections

KUALA LUMPUR: Voters in the parliamentary constituencies of Kuala Kangsar in Perak and Sungai Besar in Selangor are going to the polls today in two by-elections to elect their new MPs.
Polling centres in the two constituencies opened at 8am today, with 23 centres in Kuala Kangsar and 28 in Sungai Besar. Polling will close at 5pm.
The two by-elections are being held following the deaths of the MPs, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad of Kuala Kangsar and Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon of Sungai Besar, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5. Four other people also died in the mishap.
The Kuala Kangsar by-election is a four-cornered contest, involving Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar's widow Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid of the Barisan Nasional), Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad of PAS, Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli of Amanah and Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, an Independent candidate.
In Sungai Besar, the contest is three-cornered among Budiman Mohd Zohdi of BN, Dr Abdul Rani Osman of PAS and Azhar Abdul Shukur of Amanah.
Election Commission chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hisham Abdullah said the EC expected a 75 per cent voter turnout for the two by-elections.
He said the results were expected to be announced at about 9pm.
In the last general election, in 2013, Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar won the Kuala Kangsar seat with a majority of 1,082 votes by securing 14,218 votes to beat Khalil Idham Lim of PAS and Independent candidate Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim.
In Sungai Besar, Noriah garnered 18,695 votes to beat Mohamed Salleh M. Hussin of PAS by a majority of 399 votes. — Bernama
