Zahid thanks police for maintaining order during by-election campaign

KUALA KANGSAR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today expressed his thanks to the police officers and personnel who had ensured security during the campaign for the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections.
The Deputy Prime Minister said they had done an excellent job, given that they had to be extra vigilant and work harder during the fasting month of Ramadan.
The campaign period was from nomination on June 5 up to the eve of polling yesterday.
"Congratulations to the police officers and personnel. Hopefully, there will be no untoward incidents (during polling) today," said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister.
He spoke at a 'sahur' (pre-dawn meal) with police officers and personnel at the Kuala Kangsar Police Tactical Command here.
Perak Police chief Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the police would ensure peace during polling today.
He said that since June 5, a total of 2,974 police officers and personnel had been involved in maintaining order during the by-election campaign.
The Kuala Kangsar by-election is being held following the death of the MP, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
It is a four-cornered contest, involving Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar's widow Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid of the Barisan Nasional, Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad of PAS, Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli of Amanah and Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, an Independent candidate. — Bernama
