Low voter turnout due to lack of outstation voters: EC chairman

KUALA KANGSAR: The Election Commission (EC) says the low turnout at the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections is due to the outstation voters who failed to show up.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the other reason is voters who are under the impression that the results will not change the government or parliament status.
The turnout for Kuala Kangsar was 71% compared to 84.30% in the 2013 general election while turnout for Sungai Besar, today was at 74%.
"However we are satisfied with the campaigns and polling which was peaceful and harminous," he told reporters at Dewan Jubli where the results from 23 polling stations are being tabulated.
"There were some small incidents but nothing major," he added.
Mohd Hashim also said the political parties had managed to supervise and control their supporters to avoid any trouble.
"Such scenario is important to us when we hold future elections."
