KUALA KANGSAR: Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid won the Kuala Kangsar by-election with a majority of 6,969 votes.
She defeated both PAS' Najihatussalehah Ahmad who polled in 5,684 votes and Amanah's Ahmad Termizi Ramli who secured only 4,883 votes.
Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary secured only 54 votes, losing his deposit.
Mastura's amazing victory surpassed that of her late husband Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad who had obtained a majority of 1,082 votes to beat the PAS' candidate Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah and Independent candidate Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim in the 13th General Election.
The vote counting began at 5pm after 23 polling centers in the constituency closed with 71.4 % of 32,949 eligibile voters having cast their votes which included 312 early voters.
Election Commission returning officer Mior Muhammad Jamil Mior Zahari announced the result at the counting centre at the Jubli Perak Hall at 10pm.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also seen at the counting centre together with Perak BN leaders and all four of Mastura's son.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent Wan Mohammad Khairil in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5.
The Kuala Kangsar Parliamentary constituency has 32,949 registered voters comprising ordinary voters (32,632), early voters (312) and absent voters abroad (five).
The win was expected by BN as the former MP was known to have a proven track record and was well known among the locals.
Speaking to reporters at Dewan Jubli Perak , an elated Ahmad Zahid said the victory was a result from the all efforts contributed by the BN component parties and the unity of Umno in the state and national level.
"This also shows that the candidate chosen by the Prime Minister was the favourable one among the constituency," he said in addition to thanking reporters who gave full coverage during the campaigning period.
