SUNGAI BESAR: The Barisan Nasional's landslide victory in Sungai Besar by-election will pave the way for the coalition to recapture Selangor in the next general election, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
"Yes, we have won, but we want a bigger victory ... a victory in the next general election," he said at a celebratory gathering at Umno Sungai Besar division building on Saturday night, a few hours after the Election Commission announced the party's candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi as the winner.
"Our victory in Sungai Besar can be the starting point for us to make our move and bring Selangor back to BN. We can, and we have proven it," he said in a fiery speech to cheers and shouts from about 500 BN supporters in the packed hall.
Najib, who is BN chairman, said the victory in Sungai Besar should be seen as the BN's first step towards ending Pakatan Harapan's rule in the nation's wealthiest state.
"But our work is not done yet. We need to pull up our sleeves and go on the ground with the people of Selangor," he said, pointing out that disarray among opposition political parties have rendered them unfit to lead the rakyat and nation.
"The opposition is in a chaotic condition. They are launching attacks among themselves," he said, adding that the people cannot give their trust to parties that lack understanding and form a coalition which is not strong and solid."
Najib also called on BN members to close ranks and work as a single family if they want to achieve its aim of reclaiming Selangor.
"We need to set aside personal interests if we want to win. There is no place for personal interests ... only the interest of Barisan Nasional and the country," he said.
He also took the opportunity to take a swipe at his strongest critic Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying the by-election result was a proof that the rakyat has rejected the former premier.
"The rakyat has answered that they are rejecting Mahathir and the Citizen's Declaration. They know that the declaration is unnecessary and only the government can assist them," said Najib, who labelled Mahathir as a man with no principle for working with people once considered as his enemies.
