PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants law enforcement agencies in the country to better understand the role of the media in performing their duties and appreciate their contributions.
In crediting the media for its role in providing news to the people, Ahmad Zahid acknowledged that sometimes the media does publish stories that do not go down well with what the authorities, including the police and immigration, would have liked.
"Of course, media coverage have on many occasions commended the success stories of the authorities, and yes, sometimes the reports are otherwise.
"It is not their negative intention, but just as a reminder to us all to perform our duties and powers responsibly and according to procedures," he said during a breaking of fast event with the police and media representatives at his residence, here, today.
"Hence why I organised this event today, so that all of you can bond and understand one another better. There's no reason for the media and authorities to point fingers at each other," he added.
Ahmad Zahid also expressed hope that both quarters would "hold on to this existing chemistry", and build on from there.
"I am the one responsible for the rakyat's safety and security, and yes, we have to commend the law enforcement agencies. But, we also have to care for our media friends to provide us coverage," he said.
He also lauded the police for always leading the front line in ensuring the country's security.
Also present were Ahmad Zahid's wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, officers from the home ministry and police and media representatives.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid also gave out contributions to 101 orphanages and teachers from the Maahad Tahfiz Akademi Iqra' Al-Quran Kajang.
