KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has sacked former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir following the Umno Supreme Council meeting, today.
In a subsequent announcement Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said that the reason for the sacking was because the duo had taken arms with the opposition party recently.
In addition, Umno vice president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's membership has been suspended until a report on the matter is completed by the party's disciplinary board and subsequently submitted to the party's Supreme Council.
Najib explained that Mukhriz and Muhyiddin were sacked for their indiscipline in taking up arms with the opposition party.
"The council decided to sack Tan Sri Muhyiddin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz for indiscipline, more so for sharing a stage with opposition leaders and verbally attacking Umno and its leaders ... that's a serious offence," he said during a press conference.
Najib said that the party will also terminate their funding of the Perdana Leadership Foundation because it's honorary chairman and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad had used the foundation to topple the government.
"Therefore, there is no reasonable cause for the government to continue providing any contribution whatsoever to the Perdana Leadership Foundation," he said.
The trio including Mahathir had been vocal in criticising and questioning the leadership of Najib in the matter of the RM2.6-billion political fund and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
In addition, Mahathir and Muhyiddin had also given the endorsements to the opposition party at the recently concluded Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections.
