KUALA LUMPUR: Some 600 Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI) residents are upset over a proposed service apartments' development project that has been earmarked at the Taman Rimba Kiara (TRK) public park here.
In a protest today, they questioned Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for allowing the 4.9ha land that is part of TRK, or "open space", to be turned into a commercial zone for nine blocks.
A plot has also been designated as "future developments".
Leading the residents into TRK for a walkabout was the association committee member Dr. Pola Singh, who lamented a sizable part of the park will be used as parking space.
"It is as good as gone with the debris and noise pollution (if the plan falls through)," he told theSun.
Residents agreed that should the development go ahead, it would result in a high density plot, creating a cramped environment and possibly, an encroachment into the park to make way for future tenants.
Checks on leaflets distributed at the protest showed that the land will split into nine plots with high rise buildings, with the highest at 54 storeys and housing 2,200 apartments.
"This raises the existing ratio of 60 persons per acre to as high as 979 persons per acre, increasing the land plot ratio to 1:10, or 5.2 million sq. feet," a statement on the documents read.
The proposed development has also raised a poser on the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020.
According to City Hall's website, "the existing open spaces of Bukit Kiara, Taman Tun. Dr. Ismail and the forested hills of Kampong Sungai Penchala shall be preserved together with the West Valley Park".
TTDI Residents Association chairman Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar reiterated the land should be maintained as an "open space".
"We are not taking legal action against DBKL, we are only appealing for them to maintain the park," he told reporters when asked on the next course of action to be taken by the committee.
In an immediate response, mayor Datuk Seri Mhd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said the development does not involve the gazetted park.
