KUALA LUMPUR: The government is expected to implement the Demerit Points System (Kejara) as well as enhancing the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) this year in a bid to reduce traffic accidents.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pix) said the two systems will be implemented once approved by the Cabinet.
"We will implement the Awas and Kejara system together," he told a press conference after launching the "Ops Bersepadu" road safety campaign in Sungai Besi toll plaza yesterday.
He said these systems are related to amendments made to the Road Transport Act in Parliament in May.
He added they were supposed to come into force in May but were postponed due to technical problems.
On Ops Bersepadu, he said the nationwide operation in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be on from June 29 till July 13.
The enforcement actions to be carried out will include urine tests on bus drivers, which will be done with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), at 30 bus terminals nationwide.
At the same time the enforcement officers will also carry out spot checks on buses.
Liow said during this period, the speed limits for federal highways will be reduced from 90km/h to 80km/h, while for state highways it will be reduced from 80 km/h to 70km/h.
He also reminded motorists to obey road traffic rules and not to text while driving.
