MAHB happy with AirAsia's LCCT promo, but stresses KLIA2 name to stay

SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) will allow AirAsia to market Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) as the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).
Stating that MAHB was happy with the decision, its managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali however stressed that the name klia2 must be retained.
Asked whether AirAsia's LCCT marketing on klia2 would cause confusion to passengers, Badlisham said "it is a gray area that we have to work on".
"The Transport Ministry has spoken to both parties (MAHB and AirAsia). I have also read (AirAsia chief executive officer) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes's statement," he said.
"He wanted to do a promotion of low cost in klia2. I think we can come to a middle ground for the betterment of passengers," he told reporters after the launching of iWALK at klia2 here.
It was reported on Wednesday that Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had allowed AirAsia to market the airport as a LCCT, following a meeting between the ministry and AirAsia.
The decision came after a long-standing feud between MAHB and AirAsia over the branding of klia2.
Badlisham said MAHB would be meeting AirAsia "very soon" to clarify further on the marketing effort to be undertaken by the budget carrier.
He however said that AirAsia would not be allowed to use the word LCCT in boarding passes it issues, as it would be in violation of the law.
He added that "KUL2" and "KULM" have been designated as the official code for both klia2 and KLIA main terminal.
"The boarding pass cannot be changed that way as it will violate the rule. It cannot be changed and I think they (AirAsia) know that," he said.
Meanwhile, Liow said AirAsia's LCCT marketing could be beneficial to the national aviation industry.
"As long as the proposal is good for the nation, the government and MAHB will support such an initiative," he said.
