GEORGE TOWN: State opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid has called on Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to relinquish his post or go on leave pending the outcome of the two charges he faces for abuse of power and graft.
She said although Lim was not bound by the general order that applies to civil servants, he should do so as a matter of principle until his name is cleared.
"How can he lead the government when he himself is shadowed with corruption charges?
"It is a shadow of doubt on his leadership," she said during a press conference at Menara Boustead today.
The Teluk Tawar assemblyman said Lim's administration which initiated the principles of competency, accountability and transparency (CAT)in their governance, should walk the talk.
"I believe that he will get the chance and opportunity to defend his innocence in the court of law," she said.
Earlier, Jahara said the state opposition has sent a proposal with regards to the Penang Transport Council (PTC) to local government, traffic management and flood mitigation committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow to make an amendment to the council before they (Barisan Nasional) can accept an appointment to the council.
She said the amendment is necessary to enable the council to serve as a committee that is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and certifying the approval in the implementation of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).
Last May, the Penang state government appointed 24 additional members to the PTC.
The appointments includes Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblyman and representatives from non-governmental organisations which will provide representation for all stakeholders in the council.
