SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Narcotics Crime Investigation Department together, with the cooperation of the Narcotic Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) officers, have detained seven inmates believed to have been active in distributing drugs to fellow inmates in the centre in Jelebu.
Negeri Sembilan Police chief Datuk Jaafar Mohd Yusof said the seven men, aged between 28 and 42 and hailed from Johor, Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Melaka, were detained on Wednesday for investigations for 60 days under Section 3(1) of the Dangerous Drugs (Special Measures) Act 1985.
"They were admitted to the Jelebu Puspen last year. All of them had previous records related to drug abuse, including addiction, possession and distribution," he said in a statement here today.
Jaafar said early investigations found that the group had been conducting their activities since early last year, and the drugs were obtained from a friend of one of the suspects outside the centre.
He said with the arrest, police believed they had crippled drug distribution activities in Puspen.
Meanwhile, Jaafar said the current drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation programme was not so effective in tackling drug issues, especially in the state.
He added that 1,897 or 64% of the 3,006 addicts arrested since January were repeat offenders while 1,109 (36%) were new addicts. — Bernama
