GEORGE TOWN: The Umno Tanjong division is puzzled how Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who has been charged with graft and abuse of power can fulfil his duties.
Division chief Datuk Ahmad Ibni Hajar said people would be doubting Lim's credibility.
He said the second term chief minister should instead step down or take leave at least until he was cleared of the allegations.
"He (Lim) can make a comeback after being proven innocent," he said today after distributing aid to 200 people in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya festivities.
Lim is alleged to have committed the offences in relation to the purchase of a bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn here from a businesswoman.
He denies the charged and faces a maximum 20 years in prison in found guilty for the offences.
Ahmad urged Lim to be a gentleman by stepping away from the chief ministership while going through the legal process.
"He should relinquish his post and pass the baton to someone else until the charges are cleared," he said, mirroring various quarters who have made similar calls and added such a move also applied to the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership.
